Welcome to Dreamland / Against Perfection

Welcome to Dreamland / Against Perfection

A photographic exhibition featuring the work of Kerry Simmons and Oliver David.

Private View Thursday 2nd June 2011 6pm – 10pm

Daily - Friday 3rd June – Thursday 9th June 12pm – 6pm

Working methodically in self imposed isolation Simmons seeks to express the transcendental beauty of the urban landscape. A series of images removed from context, Welcome to Dreamland charts her solitary journey through Mongolia as one of aesthetic experience and observation.

In contrast David’s unpremeditated, street photography seeks to represent the ambiguous, unclear and ugly aspects of the everyday. Against Perfection sets itself against the Utopian imagery of billboards and magazines and reiterates the possibility of things being other than they are.

As well as being a showcase for the two individual photographers, the exhibition invites the viewer to consider the gamut of photographic possibility and to reflect on their own relationship to the photographic image.

'Image to Object'. Call for submissions

Red Gate Gallery invites artists to submit work for an exhibition in January 2011 titled 'Image to Object'. Artists are asked to submit works which explore the relationship between the nature of the image and the object whilst challenging the boundaries between 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional disciplines. The exhibition will ask where the image ends and the object begins and discuss how the artist's process or intervention transforms the image into an object, or vice versa.

Taking inspiration from art which uses devices such as the vitrine, archives, assemblage, found objects/ready-mades artists are invited to test the interface between space, material and process.

Work can be in any form, including, but not limited to, painting, drawing, photography, installation, sculpture, live art or performance art.

Artists are asked that submitted works are no bigger than 80cm wide (two-dimensional) or 1m x 1m 1m (floor standing). We can provide plinths for small sculptural pieces. In order to accommodate all artists within the space, each artist will be limited to one work each. The gallery will curate the show, send out invitations, invite the press, invigilate the show and organise the private view. Accepted artists will be asked for a submission fee of £75 which is exclusively to cover the cost of the space, marketing costs and production of promotional postcards and a catalogue. We do not take any commission on sales.

Artists are asked to submit several images indicative of the work they would like to make for the show, or an image of an existing piece, along with a statement, CV, contact details and a website link if available by 12th December 2010.

The show will take place from 14th Jan 2011 to 1st Feb 2011 with a private view taking place on 14th Jan, with delivery days on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th. Artists will be asked to arrange to collect their work on 2nd Feb.

Busy Bee Richard Watkins (aka Pen Paper Pause) has been encouraging others to elaborate on his visual capers to date...

His new project 'Take It and Run', encourages participants to expand upon the visual delights of Richard's work and express in their own desired medium. But you'd better be quick, as no two people can reproduce the same piece twice!
